TEXTILE RECYCLING

ABOUT MOOSH

Moosh Limited is a family run textiles recycling company.

It has been one of the leading textiles recycling merchants in
the UK for the past 25 years and are one of the UK’s largest
textile recycling companies.

Our highly skilled work force sort, grade and process around
300 tonnes of textile materials weekly and this number is
steadily growing.

Our senior staff have over 25 years of experience in the industry
and are always looking for the best solution to sustain textiles
waste management.

OUR ENVIRONMENT

Recovering and recycling textiles provides both environmental
and economical benefits by:

Reducing the need for landfill space: Certain synthetic fibre products do not decompose, while natural fibre such as wool does decompose but produces methane which contributes to global warming.

Reducing pressure on virgin resources. This includes materials traditionally used
in textiles such as cotton or wool, as well as oil and other chemicals employed to produce synthetic fibres.

Reducing pollution as well as water and energy consumption.

Reducing the demand for dyes and fixing agents. This, in turn, lowers the
number of problems caused by their use and manufacture.

BENEFITS OF TEXTILES RECYCLING WITH MOOSH

Recycling can greatly benefit the environment, not only in reducing the amount of waste
that would otherwise go to landfill, but also in reducing the usage of harmful products that
would otherwise be used during manufacturer, for example every cotton t-shirt we process,
can reduce the need for harmful chemicals, such as silicone waxes, harsh petroleum
scours, softeners, heavy metals, flame and soil retardants, ammonia, and formaldehyde.
Textiles present particular problems in landfill as synthetic products may not decompose,
whilst woollen garments produce methane (a greenhouse gas twenty times more potent
than CO2). Moosh's work provides untied income for charitable programs, whilst giving a
second chance to garments and shoes keeping them out of landfill, helping to create both
economic stimulus and employment in England, as well as in Africa and Asia.

With drought and water shortages becoming an ever increasing global concern, it is worth
nothing that it can take 2,700 litres of water to produce the cotton needed to make just on
t-shirt. So every sack of cotton textiles that is recycled with Moosh helps to eliminate the
need for at least 118,000 litres of fresh water. By sorting clothes for re-use and recycling,
with re-use being preferred, Moosh are actively helping the United Kingdom meet its
carbon footprint targets. However its doesn't end there, by converting any residual organic
textile waste into carbon-trapping residue, through the transformatve action of pyrolysis,
using inorganic waste as fuel, Moosh is also able to also assist clients further reduce their
carbon footprints, simply through the act of choosing Moosh as a recycling partner. The
United Kingdom is committed to reducing its CO2 emissions by 80% below 1990 levels by
2050, please help us to make that happen.

Unfortunately, shoes cannot be recycled as they are made up of so many different types of materials, but there is great demand from people wanting to reuse your unwanted shoes in Third world countries. This in affect helps struggling countries build there economy and contributes to less harm going to the environment.

Your shoes help create employment and trading opportunities in these less fortunate countries, as well as create jobs within the UK for those sorting and checking all the shoes before they leave the country.

Moosh can supply our clients with all types of matching pairs of men's shoes, women's shoes, children shoes and sports shoes. Every pair of shoes is visually inspected, graded and laced, or banded, together at our processing plant in Kent. The shoes are shipped abroad where they are given a new lease of life, providing low cost footwear to people who need them most.

Over 72% of the world’s population uses second hand shoes and clothing,. Americans generate almost 13 million tons of textile waste per year. Brits generate about 1.12 million tons of textile waste a year. Less than 11% of the textile waste the US creates annually.

Research shows that when recycling is compared to the production of new products, we can reduce our carbon footprint and CO2 emissions significantly. Less production reduces the need for raw materials resulting in reduced waste.

Your hand in the recycling world will help free our landfills of the millions of tons of textiles tossed each year, protect our environment and best of all, help others in developing nations create a self-sustaining enterprise.

Did you know that the average UK household owns
around £4,000 worth of clothes and about 30% of it hasn't
been worn in the last year? And that we bin 350,000
tonnes of used clothing every year – that's equivalent to
the weight of more than 29,000 London buses!

At Moosh we aim to raise awareness of our duty to the
environment through our schools programme.

Schools receive payment for all textiles collected from
their banks which we supply free of charge.

USEFUL FACTS

UK Textiles Recycling

Nearly half of discarded textiles are donated to charities. About 61% of clothes recovered for second-hand use are exported.

In many African countries, over 80% of the population dress themselves in second-hand clothing.

With the re-use of recovered materials in manufacturing processes or in consumption cycles, there is a strong decrease of CO2
emissions compared to the production of virgin materials. Here is an example of the environmental benefits derived from a study
of the University of Copenhagen (research sources 2008) which shows the environmental advantages resulting from the
collection of used clothing.

By collecting 1kg of used clothing, one can reduce: - 3.6kg of Co2 emissions - 6000 litres of water consumption - 0.3 kg of the
use of fertilizers - 0.2kg of the use of pesticides

Research found that more than two-thirds of textile waste in Britain is sent to landfill, equating to around 1.4 million tonnes of
material, despite the fact that there is spare capacity in textile recycling plants.

It calculated that recovering and recycling just 10 per cent of the waste currently sent to landfill could generate revenues of
around £23.8m a year
